Some might argue that moving forward, flying mounts basically quirked the difficulty curve - the "meaningful journey" as it will - seeing as you could just bypass all of the mobs on the ground to get straight to your quest objective or to wherever you were going in the world. When it comes to implementation going forward, this is a tough one as well. There aren't many tangible benefits to the mounts other than being able to do end game content that requires you have them. Insofar as benefits outweighing the detriments, I don't know. Going around ganking people isn't what generates the most honor, so players in 2019-2020 just aren't attracted to that as much. Besides, it's not like it really matters because there's actually very little meaningful WPvP in Classic as it is. People will still be out farming mobs, grinding out rep, or questing and that's mainly where all of the action occurs anyways.
Firstly, WPvP doesn't primarily occur while travelling on a mount so whether you're on the ground or in the air matters very little. I will say however that I don't believe that flying mounts ruined WPvP and even if they did, I don't think it will really matter this time around.
It'd be impossible to imagine how the game would have been without flying as it was an integral part of the experience. This is a difficult question to answer, primarily because some parts of the game are literally built behind having flying mounts. (Corpse camping) All other arguments are distractions from that fact. Seriously though, the only aspect of PvP that's "ruined" by flying are the unfair match ups that toxic assholes insist on using to ruin the gaming experience of others. Or more accurately ruins their ability to unfairly ruin other people's gaming experience. If their prey can just rez behind a tree and fly to safety, it ruins their game. You see, after the arduous time they spend expertly tracking their prey to a common afk flight path landing, or to just outside of a neutral town gate/low level dungeon, they deserve to kill that solo noob at least 14 times to make it worth their while. These cheeto stained individuals hate the idea of flying mounts because it takes away their bread and butter. The kind of extreme content that occasionally involves grouping up with some like-minded smooth brains to take on a single geared opponent or surprise a tank on their way to raid. The type that love to take on the challenging and extreme content of killing lowbies and ganking under-geared noobs. I think the people that complain the most about flying mounts are the elite pvpers.
